New DfE funding is now available to help academies ensure that that their leaders, key trustees and clerks are properly supported.
The initiative is designed to build the capacity of governance leaders, for example Chairs, Vice Chairs and Committee Chairs, by providing training and support, to help improve the effectiveness of their board.
Up to £500 is available for each eligible participant board and all school academies are eligible to apply.
Some academies that meet certain criteria may be eligible for a higher level of support, with up to £2,000 available to boards or local governing bodies that:
Govern two or more schools (including multi-academy trusts or federations)
Govern a school which is located in an opportunity area and which is either rated by Ofsted as “requires improvement” or is rated “good” or “outstanding” but is identified as coasting.
Additionally, up to £350 is available for clerks. The clerking programme aims to professionalise the quality of the role so that governing boards receive the administrative and procedural information, advice and support they need to operate effectively.
In most cases, the training programmes will be provided either at zero or minimal, cost to individual schools undertaking either the leadership development or the clerking development programmes.
A number of accredited training providers have been selected by the DfE to deliver the programmes and funding for eligible participants is paid directly to the provider, rather than to an individual school, MAT or federation.
More details on the programmes are available on the DfE website here.
