HMRC’s new way of conducting VAT enquiries

HMRC’s new way of conducting VAT enquiries

Following changes to their internal procedures, HMRC are now conducting VAT enquiries remotely which involves a lengthy Teams call preceded and then followed by a demand for electronically submitted records and copy invoices.

The responses you give on the call are manually noted down and you will then be asked to check and confirm the accuracy of your responses once transcribed.

Whereas face to face inspections took at most a day and often a lot less, this new way of enquiring can be very protracted and go on for a number of weeks with constant requests for extra information.

Whether we prepare your VAT returns for you or you do them yourselves we would strongly recommend that you involve us if you get an enquiry. We have extensive experience of dealing with HMRC’s VAT teams and can ensure the matter is closed off with the minimum possible fuss and disruption to your business.
