An independent school in Shrewsbury has taken the ground-breaking step to cancel all school holidays – a move that has been welcomed by parents.

Shrewsbury Prepatoria, is believed to be the first school in England to scrap term times and open its doors all year round.

The school, which was established in September 2018 by head teacher, Jane Smalley, hopes the initiative will help the growing numbers of working parents who struggle to make provision for childcare during the 13 weeks’ leave which schools traditionally adopt.

Instead, parents are allowed to take their children out of school for up to six weeks a year, whenever they wish — an action which would result in a fine and a threat of prosecution in the state sector.

Ms Smalley claims that, the cost of the independent school’s of £6,540 a year fees are offset by the money which parents save on holidays taken during the off-peak season.

She also believe that because there is no ‘race’ to fit the curriculum into 190 days, her pupils benefit from a slower pace, with more focus on play. The school reinforces this ethos with a ‘no homework policy’.

“It’s a no brainer,” said Ms Smalley “Being open all year long, and seeing the impact on the children, I think — why isn’t this being offered to every family?”
