HMRC have extended the deadline for second homeowners to apply for a refund of the extra 3% stamp duty they paid. This reclaim is available to those who sell their old property within 3 years of purchasing their new main residence.
The government has just announced that anyone whose three-year deadline was from January 2020 onwards will be granted an extension if they write to HMRC. The delay in selling must be because of reasons outside of your control such as COVID-19 preventing the sale.
Once the house has been sold you can write to HMRC and explain why you were unable to sell your previous home within 3 years.
