Hereward Primary School, located in Loughton, supports 440 children from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. The school is committed to creating an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child can grow in confidence, develop key life skills and achieve their full potential both inside and outside the classroom.
To further this commitment, Hereward is continuing to develop its OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, which focuses on the importance of creative, active and child-led outdoor play. The school’s vision is to transform its outdoor areas into a vibrant, accessible and all-weather learning and play environment that encourages physical activity, wellbeing, teamwork and imagination throughout the year.
Outdoor play has a significant impact on children’s social, emotional and physical development. Through the OPAL programme, pupils are encouraged to explore, problem-solve, collaborate and build resilience while enjoying safe and stimulating play opportunities. At a time when many children are increasingly drawn to screens and indoor activities, Hereward is passionate about giving children the opportunity to experience meaningful “real play” that supports healthy development and positive mental wellbeing.
The grant from the Haslers Foundation will help the school purchase a large parts storage shed along with new outdoor play equipment and resources. These additions will allow children to access a wider variety of creative and active play experiences in a safe and secure environment. The project will benefit the entire school community by providing an engaging outdoor space where pupils can learn, play and thrive together.
