Education Bulletin
Despite the introduction of various diversity initiatives, the gender pay gap within the UK’s largest academy trusts remains substantial.
Recent analysis reveals that the average pay disparity at the top 20 trusts stood at 32.3 per cent last year, indicating only minimal progress from the 32.5 per cent reported in 2022 and 33 per cent in 2021.
According to a recent review by The Guardian, 97 out of the 100 public bodies with the largest gender pay gaps were academy trusts.
This disparity is attributed not only to women typically occupying lower-paid or part-time roles within schools but also to the structural pay inequalities within the sector. Despite some positive shifts, overall progress across the sector is slow.
Since 2018, UK employers with more than 250 employees have been required to publish data concerning the median pay for male and female employees per hour, highlighting disparities.
This transparency is a step towards addressing inequality, yet the persistent gaps underscore the challenges that remain.
The slow progress in closing these gaps is particularly concerning in an education profession that upholds equity as a core value.
